Mutant Tomatoes
Mankind has always been looking for ways to make food more available. Mankind also has been looking for more ways to increase profits in business. As you may know, scientists have found a way to modify the genetic information in crops so that they yield new traits. The goal for GMO (genetically modified organism) crops is to reduce the costs associated with growing and selling food. This makes more food available and increases profits, but at the cost of producing something that has less in common with nature's time tested formula. An example of a GMO crop would be the "Flavr Savr" which is a tomato that has an increased shelf life due to the induced genetic mutations. This saves companies a lot of money, but makes it so that people are unwittingly consuming preservatives that the crop has been reprogrammed to develop.

Recent tests on rats conclusively show negative side effects when being fed GMO corn. A scientific report can be found at biolsci.org titled, "A Comparison of the Effects of Three GM Corn Varieties on Mammalian Health". The results were quite telling. According to the tests, "Effects were mostly concentrated in kidney and liver function, the two major diet detoxification organs". We definitely encourage you to see the results for yourself.

The Organic Consumers Association is a non-profit association campaigning for health, justice, and sustainability. They have recently revealed some very rotten information about several "natural" brands. The OCA is promoting a boycott on Brands like Kashi (owned by Kellogg's) and Naked Juice (owned by Pepsi) to name just a couple. These companies have been giving out obscene amounts of money (2.5 Million in the case of Pepsi) towards defeating prop 37, which is a GMO labeling initiative. So what we're saying here is that these companies find it necessary to spend that much money to cover up the fact that GM ingredients are present in their foods. If GM is so harmless, then why the effort to hide these facts?

As a society we will have to deal with GMO foods for a long time to come, and at the very least it's important that we distinguish GMO from organic foods, so consumers know what they're eating. Personally, you won't see me eating any of the food from the pseudo-natural companies who are spending millions to hide valuable information from people like you and I.

My personal opinions on the matter are that although we as a species have something to gain from genetic modification, we haven't properly studied its effects. I am worried that the genes have contaminated wild species, and that they are nutritionally inferior to their organically grown counterparts. Another huge issue to me is that it's impossible at times to know if a food is GMO or not. People who don't want to partake in this experiment deserve the right to opt out and get time tested want natural foods. Increasingly in modern times, we as a species are being reckless with the stream of new genetic modifications being introduced to our food supply.
